Insurance Underwriter

Dashboard Case Study

Role

Lead UX / UI Designer, Researcher

Tools

Figma, Figjam, Microsoft Copilot

Timeline

May 2026 - July 2026

Overview

In this project I spent approximately 9 weeks conducting a full end-to-end case study with the end goal of sharpening my user experience design/ research skills, my Figma prototyping ability, as well as applying my skills to an unfamiliar domain to create a new dashboard that would ideally improve the workflows of insurance underwriters.

My Role

As a UX/UI Designer and researcher on this project, I was responsible for:

  • Leading research, analysis and critical ideation.

  • Owning the end-to-end UX process

  • Developing and maintaining a comprehensive design system

  • UI design and advanced prototyping to build the most comprehensive platform possible

Problem Statement

After multiple weeks of research, synthesis, and ideation, I developed a core problem statement that would help guide this project:

"Legacy underwriter platforms cause immense friction for users, leading to frustration, cognitive overload, and decreased efficiency in critical workflows."

Development Process

#1 Discovery — I conducted extensive AI-powered research to understand context, the users, and the problems they currently face.

Methods:

  • Searched for insights throughout articles, forums, and web blogs.

  • Utilized Microsoft Copilot to enable deeper research.

  • Simulated user research with Copilot.

Key Insights:

  • Legacy dashboards and data systems heavily limit the workflows of insurance underwriters

  • Users need key performance indicators at an immediate glance in order to make underwriting decisions quickly.

#2 Definition — I analyzed the data acquired from my research to develop key artifacts.

Personas — These Personas would guide the development of the rest of this project.

User Journey — This user journey outlined the traditional experience insurance underwriters encounter and what they are feeling at each step.

Affinity Map — Affinity mapping helped match pain points to specific categories as well as potential solutions to those pain points.

#3 Development — I developed a comprehensive design system that lead to the construction of the final interactive prototype.

This design system governs everything from color usage, typography, and spacing to advanced site-wide components and Figma variables that empower complex prototyping techniques.

Final Solution

Core takeaways

Throughout this case study, I was truly able to sharpen my research and design skills all in a true end-to-end UXD process, making it a truly exceptional experience.

Not only was I able to deepen my knowledge of UXD in general, I was also able to apply my skills and practices to a domain I have no prior exposure to with very limited visibility before even undertaking the project initially.

This project will surely transfer to other areas of my UXD career for many years to come.
